Thousands of twins, one important caution

A classic study using self-reported sleep data from thousands of adult twin pairs found significant hereditary contributions to sleep length and sleep quality. The estimates varied across subgroups, including by sex, age and whether twins lived together.

The result supports a genetic contribution to differences between people. It does not mean a fixed percentage of one woman’s sleep is genetic.

Sex and context can change the pattern

A twin-sibling study of a regular week night found familial clustering for several sleep measures, with different patterns in women and men. In women, bedtime and sleep problems showed heritable components while awakening time appeared strongly shaped by environmental circumstances.

This is a reminder that 'sleep genetics' is not one trait. Bedtime, duration, quality, insomnia symptoms and circadian timing can have different determinants.

Female twins and daily rhythms

A study of 53 female twin pairs using continuous temperature, activity and position data reported heritable variation in daytime and night-time sleep measures. The sample was small, so the estimates are better treated as a signal for further research than a universal benchmark.

What to track instead of chasing a genetic score
