What twin studies can separate
Identical twins share essentially all of their DNA, while fraternal twins share about half of segregating genetic variation on average. Comparing similarity across these groups helps researchers estimate how much variation in a population is statistically associated with genetic and environmental differences.
That framework has repeatedly found heritable components for alcohol, nicotine and other substance-use disorders. The estimates vary by substance, sex, age, cohort and measurement method.
Genes need opportunity and exposure
A genetic predisposition cannot produce a substance-use disorder without some form of exposure. Availability, peer groups, family context, stress, trauma, policy and socioeconomic conditions can affect whether and how substances are used.
